Fish and Amphibians of the Ten Mile Creek Watershed

Longtail Salamander

The tributaries and main stem of Ten Mile Creek are home to many species of fish and amphibians. We have identified 26 fish species that occur in Ten Mile Creek and its tributaries based on the list of species that Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) found in the tributaries and main stem of Ten Mile Creek from 1994 to 2025. The 26 fish species include 17 sensitive- to highly-sensitive species that can thrive only in higher quality streams, such as Ten Mile Creek. However, the data show that overtime there has been a decline in the population of sensitive fish. The majority of the fish species in the watershed are native fish; several are non-native – Brown Trout, Green Sunfish, Large-mouth Bass, and Bluegill.

The 14 amphibians on our list include 5 frogs, 2 toads and 7 salamanders, including 2 species of greatest conservation need – the Longtail  and the Red Salamander. John Parrish compiled this list of 14 amphibians based on data from the 2013 Ten Mile Creek Watershed Environmental Analysis for the Ten Mile Creek Amendment and the 2013 Natural Resources Management Plan for Natural Areas in M-NCPPC Parkland in Montgomery County, Maryland.
